Habitat Plan for ASD Families

A way home to independent living -- Innovative autism family supports

Because we deal with multi-generational autism issues, we understand that there have been very few choices for families, parents or individuals striving for independent lifestyle options.

Since we have often survived as an employment and income-challenged family we've addressed many unmet needs due to limited service availability for high-functioning ASD individuals in our region.

Most state legislatures haven't provided funding for free or low fee-based interventions and supports for high-functioning autistics. Families typically rely on the public educational departments in their cities or counties. Often, board of education leaders 'avoid' complying with federal requirements for access to equal educational benefits for disabled students.

This was the case with our sons -- the Sheffield, Alabama city schools artfully avoided our many requests for interventions and services for our sons, even after they were formally diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders!

Finding a rewarding vocational path that results in being able to afford housing and essential quality of life needs is challenging for anyone starting out-- even more for ASD individuals transitioning out of education or public service-based supports, if they were fortunate enough to have those provided in their early developmental years.

Our Habitat Plan first began as a time-tested option to create retirement security for ourselves while securing vocational options for our youngest autistic son. As we began our journey into homesteading, Sharon's deep research into  traditional American lifestyles centered around self-sufficiency led to a unique awareness of several innovative directions that could provide ASD individuals and their families, sustainable income and housing plans that support an independent quality of life.

Autism requires individualized approaches -- we can't promise our plan will work for everyone. But, we welcome you to our ASD sites, including articles, resource links and future consulting opportunities to aid you in your journey.

We believe that working cooperatively, we will find our way home... together.
